Ah Gratitude. Such a simple yet powerful thing.
It’s been almost four years since I wrote down my first gratitude down. And since then I’ve gone through dozens upon dozens upon dozens of journals. I’d have to count to see how many I have filled up.
It started out as a life line. And it became part of who i am.
I started doing it during one of the lowest points of my life. When I could not see a way out of my pain, or that things would ever get better. It was a devastating period in my life that I rarely, if ever, share. And looking back now, if i had not started journaling and writing down my gratitudes, I’m not sure where I would be today.
What you need ~ A journal and pen. I encourage you to use a pen and not a pencil. I don’t want you to erase. You also need some place quiet where you can be alone.
Make a commitment to write down ten things you are grateful for every single day. I know at first that seems like a lot. I mean, in the beginning I was writing things like, “I’m grateful for my coffee, or I’m grateful for my health, or I’m grateful for my dog.” If you have trouble thinking of things you are grateful for, look around. Do you have a home? Do you have a car that gets you to point A to point B? Don’t forget to look outside your window. Are you grateful for the changing seasons? The snow in the winter? The heat in the summer? The flowers in the spring? The changing of the leaves in fall?
Are you grateful for your eyesight to stare up at the stars at night? Are you grateful for the cool breeze on your skin on a summer’s night? Are you grateful for he smell of pumpkin when September rolls around?
After a while it will be hard to stop at just ten things you are thankful for. Trust me.
Once you’re written your ten things I want you to write three things that you want but write them as if you already have them. If getting a degree in English is what you want write down “I am grateful for my English degree.” If finding your soulmate is what you desire write down “I am grateful for my perfect soulmate.”
Years from now you will go back and read these entries and you will see how they came true. You have the power to live the life you truly desire. So start now and make a change.
